At Almost 65, I’m Still Working Full-Time. Here’s Why I’m Building My Retirement Freedom.

By AuntC | Building My Next Chapter With AuntC

There is something about approaching 65 that makes you look at life a little differently.

You start thinking about all the years you’ve worked, everything you’ve accomplished, the sacrifices you’ve made, and what you want the next chapter of your life to look like.

For many of us, retirement was supposed to be the reward for decades of hard work.

But what happens when you reach this stage of life and realize you’re not financially ready to retire?

What happens when you still need that paycheck, even though you’re exhausted from working?

I’m living that reality right now.

And that’s why I’ve decided to share my journey of building retirement income after 60.

Not because I’ve figured everything out. I certainly haven’t.

But because I believe there are other women out there who need to know they’re not alone.

Five Years Ago, My Husband and I Were Nearly Homeless

I want to tell you something that isn’t easy to share.

About five years ago, my husband and I came dangerously close to losing everything.

I had spent years working in mortgage lending. Eventually, I decided it was time for a change.

My plan was to leave my corporate career and begin doing mobile notary loan signings. I had even arranged what I believed would be a reliable source of income to help me make the transition.

I thought I had everything lined up.

But shortly after leaving my job, that income source fell through.

Suddenly, the financial security I had counted on was gone.

I held a California real estate broker’s license, so I decided to use it to build a real estate business.

But building a business takes time, and our financial situation was deteriorating much faster than I could build that income.

We struggled.

And then came one of the most difficult experiences of my life.

I had to voluntarily surrender my car for repossession.

Even writing those words today brings back emotions I’d rather forget.

It was devastating. It was embarrassing. And it was a painful reminder of how quickly life can change, even when you believe you’ve made responsible decisions.

I’m sharing this because financial struggles don’t just happen to people who haven’t worked hard or planned for their futures.

Sometimes life takes a turn you never expected.

And rebuilding can be especially difficult when you’re approaching retirement age.

I Rebuilt My Income, But I Can’t Keep Working This Way Forever

In January 2023, an opportunity came along that helped change our circumstances.

I took over a substantial property management portfolio.

Today, I manage approximately 80 rental properties.

That business helped me rebuild financially, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

But let me tell you something about managing 80 properties.

It’s demanding!

There are tenant issues, repairs, emergencies, owner communications, inspections, paperwork, legal requirements, and deadlines that never seem to end.

There’s always something that needs attention.

And while I’m thankful for the income, I have to be realistic.

At almost 65, I don’t want to continue working at this pace indefinitely.

I want to enjoy my life.

I want to spend more time doing the things I love.

I want to wake up in the morning knowing I have choices about how to spend my day.

Most importantly, I don’t want my financial security to depend entirely on my ability to keep managing an increasingly demanding workload.

That’s why I’m building something different.

The Backyard Homesteader Taught Me Something Important

For several years, I’ve shared my love of gardening, homesteading, and self-reliance through The Backyard Homesteader.

In November 2025, I decided to begin seriously growing its Facebook audience.

I started with a small Facebook Page Likes advertising campaign, spending approximately $5 per day.

I also committed to consistently sharing useful content, often publishing five to eight posts each day.

And I did this while working full-time!

Within approximately seven months, the page reached 10,000 followers.

Today, that community is approaching 13,000 followers.

Then, on September 7, 2026, I began building an email list for The Backyard Homesteader.

I created a free Junk Journal giveaway and used ManyChat to help interested people sign up.

In less than two months, that list has grown to more than 1,700 subscribers.

Now, I want to be transparent.

Those are audience-building accomplishments, not income figures.

I’ve made a few digital product sales, but I’m still learning how to turn an engaged audience into a sustainable online business.

And that distinction matters.

Because having followers doesn’t automatically mean you’re earning money.

Building an email list doesn’t automatically create income either.

But these experiences have taught me that I can learn new skills, use technology, create things people find valuable, and build something of my own.

Even at my age.

And that’s given me hope for the future.

Why I Created Success With AuntC

In December 2025, I began developing the vision that eventually became Success With AuntC.

This is a separate business from The Backyard Homesteader, but it’s built around something deeply personal to me.

I want to help women over 60 discover realistic ways to create additional income online.

Women who have worked hard their entire lives.

Women who are approaching retirement and wondering whether Social Security will be enough.

Women who may already be retired but find themselves struggling to keep up with rising expenses.

And women who simply want the freedom to enjoy their remaining years without constantly worrying about money.

I know what financial fear feels like.

I know what it’s like to have a plan fall apart.

And I know how exhausting it can be to rebuild when you thought you’d be slowing down.

I don’t want other women to feel that they have no options.

You Have More to Offer Than You May Realize

Here’s something I’ve come to believe.

Women over 60 have accumulated decades of experience, knowledge, wisdom, and practical skills.

Yet many don’t recognize how valuable those things can be.

Maybe you’ve spent years working in an office.

Maybe you raised children, managed a household, organized events, taught classes, provided care for others, or built a career.

Perhaps you have a hobby or special interest that people regularly ask you about.

Those experiences may provide a starting point for building an online business.

And you don’t necessarily need to become a technology expert.

You do need to learn some new things.

You do need patience.

And you need to be willing to take small, consistent steps.

On Success With AuntC, we’ll explore opportunities including:

  • Affiliate marketing: Recommending products and services you genuinely believe in and potentially earning a commission.
  • Digital products: Creating helpful guides, planners, journals, templates, and other resources people can purchase online.
  • Knowledge and services: Using your existing skills and experience to help others.
  • Content creation: Building an audience around something you’re passionate about and exploring appropriate ways to earn income from that audience.

These aren’t get-rich-quick schemes.

They require work, and none guarantees income.

But they may offer opportunities to build additional financial security without depending entirely on another traditional job.

I’m Building My Retirement Freedom Right Alongside You

I want to be very clear about something.

I haven’t reached my financial freedom goal yet.

I’m still managing properties.

I’m still learning about digital products, affiliate marketing, content creation, and online business.

I’m still experimenting, making mistakes, and discovering what works.

And I’m going to share that journey with you.

I’ll tell you about my successes, but I’ll also share the challenges.

I’ll explain what I’ve tried, what it cost, what I learned, and what I would do differently.

Because I don’t believe we need another person on the internet promising that making money online is effortless.

We need honest conversations about what’s possible, what’s realistic, and how to begin.

That’s what I want Success With AuntC to provide.

We Deserve More Than Simply Surviving Retirement

I think about the women who have spent their entire lives taking care of everyone else.

The women who worked long hours, raised families, supported loved ones, and did everything they could to make ends meet.

And now they’re approaching retirement, wondering how they’re going to afford it.

That breaks my heart.

Because after all those years of hard work, retirement shouldn’t have to mean living in poverty.

I can’t promise that building an online business will solve every financial challenge.

But I believe learning new skills, creating additional income opportunities, and supporting each other can help us move toward a more secure future.

And that’s worth working toward.

Let’s Build Our Next Chapter Together

If you’re reading this and wondering whether it’s too late to start something new, I want you to know something.

I’m almost 65.

I’m still working full-time.

I’ve experienced financial setbacks I never imagined facing.

And I’m starting another business because I believe my future can still look different from my past.

Maybe yours can, too.

I hope you’ll follow along as I build Success With AuntC.

We’ll learn together, celebrate progress, work through challenges, and encourage each other along the way.

Because our years of experience still matter.

Our dreams still matter.

And our next chapter is still ours to create.

With love,

AuntC
